Enter the known values

Find work from force, distance, and angle.

Step-by-step result

Work

Answer

100 J

Rearranged formula

W = F × d × cos(θ)

Substitution in base SI units

W = 50 N × 4 m × cos(60°) = 100 J

Sign check: angles below 90° give positive work, 90° gives zero work, and angles above 90° give negative work.

Physics work FAQ

How do you calculate work in physics?

Multiply force by displacement and by the cosine of the angle between them: W = Fd cos θ. Work is measured in joules when force is in newtons and distance is in meters.

When is work equal to zero?

Work is zero when there is no displacement, no force, or the force is perpendicular to motion at 90 degrees.

Can mechanical work be negative?

Yes. Work is negative when the force has a component opposite the displacement, which occurs for angles greater than 90 degrees.

What is one joule?

One joule is the work done when a force of one newton moves an object one meter in the force direction.

Why does the calculator use cosine?

Cosine selects the part of the force that points along the displacement. A perpendicular force does no mechanical work on that motion.
